Menorca Honey: Varieties and How to Choose the Best One

14 Sep 2026 · 2 min de lectura

Honey is one of those products that turns up in almost every Menorca gift basket, yet rarely does anyone explain what sets one variety apart from another. Here’s the guide to help you choose based on what you’re after.

Why Menorca honey is different

Menorca was declared a Biosphere Reserve by UNESCO in 1993, and that combination of Mediterranean vegetation, dry-stone walls and the absence of major industrial areas gives rise to a highly varied flora for bees to forage on. The result is honeys with nuances that shift depending on the area and the time of harvest — there isn’t a single “Menorcan honey,” but several, depending on what’s flowering at any given moment.

Wildflower honey

The most common and also the most versatile. Harvested from the island’s mixed blooms, so its flavour shifts slightly from one season to the next. It’s the best entry point if you’ve never tried Menorcan honey before — a balanced profile, neither too mild nor too intense.

Rosemary honey

Harvested during the wild rosemary bloom, so present in the Menorcan scrubland. It has a very recognisable herbaceous aroma and a lighter colour than wildflower honey. It pairs particularly well with cheese and herbal teas.

Eucalyptus honey

Darker and more intense, with a characteristic balsamic flavour. It’s the variety favoured by those looking for more character, and it’s also the one traditionally used beyond the kitchen, for herbal infusions when the weather turns cold.

How to know it’s authentic Menorcan honey

Check the label: it should clearly state the origin (Menorca) and, ideally, the specific beekeeper or apiary. A raw, minimally filtered honey tends to crystallise over time — that’s a natural process, not a defect, and it can be reversed by gently warming it in a water bath.

Where to buy it

We carry different varieties of Menorca honey at our shops in Mahón and Sant Climent, ready to take on its own or combined with cheese, sobrasada and gin in a gourmet basket. If you’re unsure which one best suits what you’re after, message us on WhatsApp.
