How to Choose the Best Mahón-Menorca PDO Cheese for Travel

Mahón-Menorca cheese is one of the island’s most sought-after gastronomic souvenirs, but it’s also one that raises the most questions: mild or cured? Will it survive the trip home? How do you know it’s authentic and not an imitation?
Mild, semi-cured or cured: which to choose
All three are the same cheese at different stages of maturing, and each has its moment:
- Mild — just a few weeks of curing, creamy texture and a gentle flavour. Best if you’re eating it in the next few days.
- Semi-cured — the middle ground, more character with a well-defined rind. The most versatile choice for travel.
- Cured — months of maturing, intense flavour and firm texture. The one that travels best and keeps longest in the fridge once you’re home.
If it’s a long trip or you want it to last for weeks, cured is the safe bet. If you’ll eat it in the next few days, mild or semi-cured have more to offer at the table.
How to recognise an authentic Mahón-Menorca PDO
Mahón-Menorca cheese with Protected Designation of Origin is made from Menorcan cow’s milk and shaped with the traditional fogasser cloth, giving it its distinctive square shape with rounded corners. The rind is rubbed with olive oil and, in many wheels, with paprika — that’s where the recognisable orange colour comes from.
Always look for the PDO seal on the packaging. It’s the only real guarantee that the milk and production follow the official specifications for the island — not everything labelled “Menorcan-style cheese” on the mainland actually meets them.
How to store it and how long it lasts
Once home, Mahón cheese keeps best wrapped in food-safe paper or a slightly damp cloth in the fridge, never in cling film pressed directly against the rind. Mild keeps well for one to two weeks; semi-cured for several weeks; cured can last months without losing quality, even gaining more character over time.
Vacuum-packing for travel
At our shops in Mahón and Sant Climent we vacuum-pack cheese at no extra cost. This not only makes it easier to fit in a suitcase without smell or mess — it also extends its shelf life considerably, so it’s the recommended option whether you’re flying or taking the ferry.
Where to buy it
You’ll find all three curing stages at our shops in Port of Mahón, Mahón Town Centre and Sant Climent. If you want to combine it with sobrasada, gin or wine as a single gift, you can also build a personalized gourmet basket.
