Mahón-Menorca PDO: What It Guarantees and How to Recognize Authentic Cheese

“Menorcan-style cheese” is a label that turns up in more places than it should, and not everyone using it is actually entitled to in the strict sense. The Mahón-Menorca Protected Designation of Origin exists precisely for that: to guarantee that what you’re buying is what it claims to be.
What a Protected Designation of Origin actually is
A PDO is a European seal that ties a product to a specific geographical area and a specific production method. It’s not a decorative logo — it implies a set of specifications governing everything from the raw material’s origin to the production method, overseen by a regulatory board that checks compliance.
What the Mahón-Menorca specifications require
- Milk origin — must come from cows raised in Menorca, not from any other source
- Traditional shaping — with the fogasser cloth, which gives the cheese its distinctive square shape with rounded corners
- Maturing on the island — the curing process must take place in Menorca, under the humidity and temperature conditions specific to the local climate
- Finished with olive oil and paprika — the rind treatment that gives it that recognisable orange hue
Any cheese that doesn’t meet these points might look similar, but it legally cannot be called Mahón-Menorca PDO.
How to recognise it on the packaging
The PDO seal must be clearly visible on the label. If a cheese is marketed as “Menorcan-style” or “Mahón-type” without that seal, it’s a sign it doesn’t go through the regulatory board — it may still be a decent cheese, but it isn’t the same product, and it doesn’t carry the same guarantees of origin.
Why it matters beyond flavour
Buying an authentic Mahón-Menorca PDO isn’t just about flavour — it’s a way of directly supporting the farmers and dairies on the island keeping this tradition alive, as opposed to industrial imitations made off the island that trade on the name without meeting any of its requirements.
Where to buy it with confidence
